Documents must be on 8.5" x 11" white paper with black ink. The first page needs a 3-inch blank top margin and must show the document title, date, all party names and marital status, mailing addresses, and the full legal description. Notary acknowledgment is required per RSMo Chapter 486. Copy fees are about $1 per page uncertified. Part of every recording fee goes to state preservation funds.
Historical St. Joseph Deed Records
Buchanan County deed records date to 1838. This covers St. Joseph's rise as a river port and outfitting point for westward travelers, through its time as a major meatpacking and manufacturing center, to the present day. Early deed records document the rapid growth of the city in the mid-1800s when it was one of the largest cities west of the Mississippi.
The Missouri State Archives has historical land records from the 1790s through 1969. Per RSMo 59.003, requests for records after December 31, 1969 go to the county recorder. Transfer on Death deeds under RSMo 461.025 let St. Joseph property owners name a beneficiary to receive property at death without probate. The deed must be recorded before the owner dies.
